My lovely friend Rosa Hildebrant is Co founder of The Giri Cafe & Residence and mum of two lovely girls, Alba (9) & Nova (7)… And I’m so happy to be sharing this inspiring lady boss on the blog! We had the pleasure of shooting Rosa and the girls at The Giri Cafe last week. It’s a ‘must visit’ spot situated in the main square of san Juan village, serving delicious food (cocktails). You can hideaway in the secret garden surrounded by beautiful flowers and delicious homegrown produce!
➳ WHERE WAS HOME FOR YOU GROWING UP? AND WHERE DID IBIZA FIT IN?
I grew up in Denmark, but always with one part of me in Ibiza as my favorite aunt fell in love with the painter Esteban Sanz and moved to the island. I had a very close relationship with my aunt and uncle and stayed with them for long stretches in their little apartment in Dalt Vila. When my uncle died I inherited a tiny place in Calle Rosario and from then on I was here as much as possible.
Now my husband and I have been living on the island 15 years – and we love it.
➳ HOW DO YOU BALANCE BEING A WORKING MUM ON THE ISLAND?
I guess wherever you are that balance is always a challenge. And maybe even more so when you are your own boss Some days I find that balance, some days I don’t. I try to reserve hours every day where I focus on the kids. Play on the plaza, bake a bread, help with homework or just hang out.
➳ WHAT IS THE MOST SPECIAL PART OF MOTHERHOOD FOR YOU?
I guess LOVE is the most special thing. That deep lioness love and protectiveness you feel for your children.
➳ DO YOU HAVE ANY FUN TRADITIONS YOU SHARE WITH YOUR CHILDREN?
Ohhh I love birthday morning celebrations with overload of danish flags and homemade buns. I love cosy xmas traditions with the entire family in our house in Denmark. But one thing that has nothing to do with “normal” traditions are our Hildebrandt Pancake Days – something we take very seriously in our little 4-person-family We make them together and each time we challenge ourselves to bake a taller stack of pancakes and then compete who can eat most.
➳ DO YOU HAVE ANY HEALTH & BEAUTY TIPS YOU SWEAR BY?
I drink loads of water & eat loads of carrots. I eat healthy in general but I love good food, good desserts and a well-mixed cocktail (well I better as I own a restaurant!)
I combine the occasional run in the hills around San Juan with hard-core work out tree times a week at Pilates Studio in Sta Gertrudis and with more quiet yoga sessions at Open Space. That’s quite a good combination: It keeps me strong and it keeps my mind focused – two things I need to get through a busy summer season!
➳ WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ‘GO TO’ SPOT ON THE ISLAND…AS A FAMILY?
A sunny spring day pic-nic in the country side in some field around San Lorenzo or an afternoon at the beach. In summer I’m addicted to our late afternoon swims at the stony beach of S’Illot. The water is crystal clear and we have it all to ourselves if we come late in the afternoon.
➳ WITH YOUR HUSBAND?
We like trying new places when we occasionally have some hours without work or kids (it’s quite a challenge to find time just for us with so much going on), so we try here and there which is a great way to keep re-inventing the island.
➳ WITH YOUR GIRLFRIENDS?
Oh la la. The ladies. We have fun wherever we are – doesn’t matter if it’s morning coffee at Wild Beets, cocktails at Plaza Parque, French delicacies at Pastis or homemade dinner. They are crazy and fun wherever they are
➳ WHAT IS THE MOST MEMORABLE HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS WITH YOUR KIDS AND WHAT’S ON YOUR TRAVEL WISH LIST?
We went on a great winter trip with the girls in a camper van where we drove through California, Nevada, Utah & Arizona. It was amazing to wake up in the different national parks where we were close to wildlife and breathtaking nature – we all loved the freedom of stopping the van in the middle of nowhere in some vast desert and bake pancakes.
When we travel we prefer to find destinations that are very different from Ibiza – the next adventure will be the never-ending nature of Greenland.
➳ WHAT IS YOUR MOST INSPIRING READ?
I love reading, but during the busy season I unfortunately do not have time to disappear into books as I do in the winter months. When I’m busy the most advanced I read are cook books for inspiration. But then in winter I practically eat books raw, one after the other.
➳ WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF BEING YOUR OWN GIRL BOSS?
Being your own boss is quite a paradoxical task: The worst is that I am always on. I am always potentially at work. The best is that I can decide when to work and in which direction I want the business to go. It takes deep breaths, a focused mind and a very, very good team both in the hotel and in the restaurant to make it work.
➳ THE BEST PART OF LIVING ON THE ISLAND FOR YOU?
I think Ibiza is a very good place to live with kids. I’m happy that my daughters are ibicencas and that they in a way have a rather “old fashioned” childhood in a very safe, healthy, openminded and fun environment.
Behind the scenes
A huge thank you to Rosa, her husband Lars & their beautiful girls for letting us take over The Giri cafe to shoot this story, you ladies rock.
